Tour of the Garden

July 29th, 2010

Thought I would do a little tour of the mini potagerie (I think that’s french for potted garden and if it’s not, I’m still going with it) I have growing around here. I also have some plants in beds around the house, too. For today, I’ll just start out with the edible ones…

Lettuce from the garden, ready for salad! The lettuce just needs to be planted where there is good soil drainage and morning sun. Most veggies and herbs, in my experience do really well in morning sun.

Sage plant…I love the texture of these leaves.

French Tarragon, this guy has grown SO big compared to the teeny tiny critter-like plant he was when I saved him

My two types of tomatoes – can’t wait for the Roma’s to be ready. Every time I find a cherry tomato ready, it goes into my mouth. One has yet to make it to a salad….. such is life.

Next up, CHIVES! They are always said “CHIVES!”

Chives!

Finally, beautiful, beautiful Rosemary. How I love thee. Delicious in bread. Delicious on salads. Delicious on potatoes. Delicious everywhere. And so hearty! I forget to water her and she’s still all good!

So there’s part of my “garden” tour. I skipped showing you my failed cilantro. I’m pretty sure when the heat attacked, it took a turn for the worse and never came back. It’s a sad thing, too, because she would have made some mean guacamole. I love my ‘guac packed with cilantro. MMM.

The basil is thriving… probably a bit too much, same goes for the parsley. They’re currently duking it out for sunlight in the same large pot on the porch. May the best herb win.

I’m thinking of building some Square Foot Garden raised beds this fall but not sure if it’s the right season to start – I have some reading to do. I probably missed the boat this spring, but perhaps you all could lend me some advice? I’d love to hear your stories from raised bed gardens, good and bad experiences!

What are you growing that you’re planning on eating or cooking with? Do you have great meals that have come from your garden or farm? Do tell!

Here are some fun, related articles that might help you out if you have an interest in herb gardens or raised beds:

Your pictures are beautiful! I wish I knew how to garden. I sadly have the black thumb of death when it comes to plants. Garden recipes would be great finds. I'm part of vegetable co-op that gives me a weekly assortment of random vegetables. Every now and then I get an oddball one like pickling cucumber. Just not sure what to do with that one. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Hi Sara, trust me, when I started out I was convinced I had a knack for killing ALL plants. I now swear by potted herbs and small beds to start with, though. With the potted herbs, you can always move them around to test out the best spot (or bring them inside early in the season) and as long as you have draining pots, they will just use the water they need. Watering has been the only "chore". Having them has been amazing for some of the great summer dishes – even livening up a salad! Thanks for stopping by :)

Hi there, stopping over from SITS Blog Frog.

I love your site, it's really nicely laid out – but it takes a long time to load on my computer (maybe I'm just having a slow day though!). I'm a new follower.

I've just started a new garden and I'm going to post some of our edible pots next week, we've for some rocket, spinach, chives, parsley, corriander and other salad leaves. It's so much fun to grow these as you get to use them very quickly. I love nipping out to the garden for fresh salad then eating it right away.

    Have a lovely day,
    Jade

Hey there, sorry I'm just getting to responding to this now! I'm normally more on top of things :) I would love to see some of your posts or share tips on gardening – I'm pretty new to it and am just learning what works/what dies…

I'm working on an email back to you, too, by the way re: 31dbbb… talk with you soon!

Hi! Saw this post on the #31DBBB Twitter thread.
I also <3 Rosemary. I haven't done any herbs lately – this is really inspiring me to do them in pots next year! I am growing pumpkins for the first time this year and they have taken over. Everyone told me they'd take over but I guess they REALLY meant they'd take over! :)
Anyway – so glad to find your site!

      Hi Cate,
Rosemary is great because it's very hearty (seems to be the consensus) and will tolerate being planted in a pot exclusively (and thereby kept alive all year) or can go in the ground in the spring/summer, then come indoors before the first frost and live in a pot through the winter. Perfect for adding a little something to those hearty winter meals — or a personal favorite, Rosemary bread!

Wow, yum! Pumpkins! I have to try that. All I can think of is pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll.. mmm.
